The AFL is reportedly set to investigate Greater Western Sydney footy boss Jason McCartney for what has been described as a “tirade” towards umpires at halftime of Friday night’s match against the Western Bulldogs.

AFL Media reporter Damian Barrett said on Sunday the league was “aware of the situation”, claiming the Giants official entered the umpires’ rooms during the main break and issued “a few expletives”.

It comes a month after Geelong coach Chris Scott was handed a $10,000 suspended fine by the league for approaching Brisbane Lions players at quarter-time in Round 2 and a week after Collingwood was fined $20,000 for Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe’s mid-game mobile phone breach.

“Witnesses to this incident have said it was an absolute tirade as to how he was referring to certain incidents in the first half to the umpires and a few expletives might have also been issued,” Barrett said on the Sunday Footy Show.

“A lot of witnesses to the situation because of the close confines of the of the two teams at Manuka Oval and also the umpires box.

“The AFL is aware of the situation, we‘ll be looking into it and we’ll be asking for please explains I’d imagine as a result of being made aware of the incident, post the game.”

Asked if he expected a fine to be issued by the AFL, Barrett suggested the league could go further.

“I would think it‘d be more than that from what I’ve been told this morning as to how it was delivered,” he said.

“It’s just a complete ‘no, no’ to anyone at footy clubs.”
