CARLTON premiership coach David Parkin has revealed he encouraged Brett Ratten to return to the coach's box.

Ratten had been criticised for coaching from the bench this season, where his emotive reactions drew the ire of some.

"I must admit I had a bit of a niggle in his ear," Parkin told Carltons website show. "The fact is that the bloke who is the captain of the ship... gets up on the bridge and runs it - he doesn't go down in the engine room and pour the oil into the engines.

"I used that analogy to him. I'm not saying that I convinced him to go back up (to the coach's box), but if you're going to control the show you've got to be in a position to see what's going on."

Parkin said Ratten "couldn't have done much better" with the Blues this season.
