Presenter Wayne Carey steps away from Channel 7 over white powder saga
Wayne Carey will not do “any media” after police made a decision on if he would be charged over a bag of white powder dropped in a WA casino.
Channel 7 has confirmed Wayne Carey will not return to the broadcaster in the fallout of an incident involving a bag of powder in a Perth casino.
Western Australia police launched an investigation after a bag fell from Carey’s pocket at Crown casino on September 1.
The footy legend says the bag contained crushed anti-inflammatory medication he used to control pain resulting from his playing days.
“Wayne has advised Seven that due to the media attention he and his family have received as a result of this incident, he doesn’t intend to do any media in 2023,” managing director of Seven Melbourne and head of network sport Lewis Martin said.
“We wish to thank Wayne for his service to Seven.”
WA Police have finalised their investigation into the incident and have not filed criminal charges against the former Kangaroos premiership player.
Carey has also been sidelined by his radio network Triple M.
WA Police Chief Commissioner Col Blanch said the casino should have contacted officers about the incident as it happened.
“We didn’t have the initial complaint at the time it occurred, which would have been my preference,” Mr Blanch told radio station 6PR.
“It will be very difficult without the substance itself to prove whether it was an illicit substance or otherwise.”
