Port’s Scott Lycett calls out social media abuse after ugly sling tackle

Port Adelaide’s Scott Lycett has called out a disturbing set of social media posts after his ugly sling tackle in Saturday’s Showdown.

Port star Scott Lycett called out trolls.

Port Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett has revealed a series of messages he received after his ugly sling tackle on Adelaide’s Ned McHenry.

Lycett lifted and dumped McHenry, knocking the young Crow out early in the Showdown clash on Saturday night.

McHenry tried to convince the trainers that he was fine despite stumbling to his feet and appearing clearly unsteady, lasting just 12 minutes of the game.

McHenry was subbed out of the game and will miss next week’s game under the 12-day concussion period under the AFL’s concussion protocols.

Demons great Garry Lyon said he believed Lycett would be sidelined, “having a couple of weeks or so off”.

“That’s one of the worse ones. That’s not one of the better ones I’ve seen from a sling tackle point of view,” Lyon told Fox Footy.

“I suspect when he looks at it, he’ll acknowledge that and know that he was caught up in the emotion of the game – which we all do at times – but he may have to pay a price.”

McHenry was in la la land.

Lycett is believed to be referred straight to the Tribunal for the tackle with Fox Footy also reporting that he could be looking at three weeks on the sidelines.

But Lycett took to Instagram to call out trolls as he shared disgusting messages he received after the tackle.

One message told Lycett to “literally kill yourself you low life” and “jump off the nearest bridge”.

A second wrote: “Pick on mchenry like ur tuff … pick on tex u ugly mother f**ker. Ur moustache looks like a f**ken slug. U ugly west coast reject (sic).”

In a third post, Lycett added a message, writing: “Footy is a physical game, but I acknowledge my tackle on New McHenry last night overstepped the mark and will be dealt with at the AFL Tribunal. I truly hope he’s OK.

“However the abuse that has followed has been outrageous.

“People should take a breath and reflect before posting.”

Seven News also reported that another poster took to Twitter, writing “Scott Lycett, I know where your parents live c***,” the tweet reads.

The report added that South Australian Police were investigating the posts.

“Police condemn any sort of threat, be it verbal, online or in person,” SA Police said.

“Any sort of threat that is reported to police will be investigated accordingly.”

The Crows have also defended the Port star, releasing a statement on its website.

“The club does not condone offensive or threatening behaviour of any kind including on social media and we will investigate whether abuse directed towards a Port Adelaide player involves one of our members, and if so will take appropriate action to reiterate that this behaviour is not tolerated,” the statement read.

He’s far from the only player who has been abused online with Tigers defender Dylan Grimes and Bulldogs star Josh Dunkley both hitting out at trolls in the past.
