Melbourne’s high-prized recruit Steven May caught in drinking session

Melbourne celebrated a much needed win on the weekend, but one injured star has come under-fire after being caught drinking.

Steven May joined the Melbourne football club in the 2018 off-season after a high-profiled switch from the Gold Coast Suns.

The former Suns captain joined the Demons on a hefty deal which saw the club also part with pick No. 6 in the draft.

His arrival in Melbourne hasn’t exactly gone according to script with the key defender arriving out of shape.

He was then struck down by injuries and suspensions which have seen him only play one game so far this season.

But now he’s set to come under even heavier fire from the club after being spotted out drinking on Sunday.

Fox Sports’ Tom Morris broke the story on May’s weekend indiscretion with the star player set to front the Melbourne playing group on Tuesday to apologise.

The club’s senior leaders will then gather to discuss a potential sanction or community service for the star recruit.

May who is undergoing rehab is believed to have spent Sunday afternoon at Richmond bar ‘Harlow’ from 2:30pm until around 6pm in which time he consumed several pints.

“There’s not a clear no drinking policy from the club, but they advise against it. There’s not a hard and fast rule at Melbourne like there is other clubs,” Morris said on Fox Footy’s On the Couch.

The club refused to rule out a potential sanction for May over the incident, but fellow On the Couch members were quick to slam May over the act.

“I’m staggered by this to be honest, I’ve got to say I’m disappointed and I’m disappointed for Steven May. He’s had a troubled start at the Demons and to be caught out or even do it behind closed doors to me suggests the bloke hasn’t learnt his lessons,” Gerard Healy said.

Former Melbourne coach Paul Roos believes May’s priorities aren’t anywhere close to being on what he’s being paid for.

“I think what it tells me, and we know we’ve got to be careful because we know players go through difficult times, now I don’t know what he’s going through,” Roos said.

“What I do know, footy is not a priority for him. Clearly not a priority.

“Now what is at the moment I’m not 100 per cent certain, but it’s not football. That’s not his number one priority. Let’s be really clear on that.

“If football was his number one priority, now I don’t know what he’s going through if he’s going through some off field issues. What I’m saying is, football is not his priority.”

Melbourne club legend Garry Lyon was disappointed in the star recruit and doesn’t feel he has a grasp on what it takes to perform at the highest level.

“It is really disappointing for him, well not him, it’s disappointing for the football club and he’s let himself down,” Lyon said.

When asked if he believed the club would come down hard on him over the incident, Lyon said the club would go a different route.

“I think they’ll take him under their wing and try and educate him. There is some things going on, which there is no excuse for what’s happening.

“If this is not the wake up call for him, I don’t know what goes on in Queensland when you get away with that stuff, but it just says he doesn’t understand that you just can’t do it.”

Brisbane premiership hero Jonathon Brown said May had shown “a lack of discipline” and wondered if previous indiscrections could have let to his fomer club letting him go.

“I just wonder whether that was one of the reasons Gold Coast was happy to move him on,” Brown said.

May was listed on the latest AFL injury report as being 3-4 weeks away from returning to the field. The Demons have a bye in Round 13, meaning if May is handed a club imposed ban he could be out of action until Round 14 in late June.
