Melbourne recruit Bernie Vince makes dash to Etihad Stadium after getting stuck in Melbourne traffic

NEW Melbourne midfielder Bernie Vince was almost an hour late to Friday night’s game against Richmond after getting caught in peak-hour traffic.

In a heart-pounding start to his career at the Demons, Vince was forced to park his car on Flinders St in the city and make a dash for Etihad Stadium.

After running the first kilometre, he caught a tram, but jumped off and ran another kilometre to ensure he got to the ground in time for a quick warm-up.

While Vince may have learned a valuable lesson about Melbourne traffic, the panicky start to his first game in red and blue did not seem to impact his on-field performance.

The former Adelaide Crow was one of the stars of the shock Melbourne win, gathering 32 possessions in a joyous start to Paul Roos’ tenure as new Demons coach.

Melbourne also unveiled a new short-kicking possession game style, frustrating the Tigers with a much more patient and deliberate build-up up the ground than last season.

The Demons, who had a preference for playing on after a mark last season, had much more difficulty retaining possession under former coaches Mark Neeld and Neil Craig.
