MELBOURNE could be headed for another double-digit list turnover at season's end, helping clean the slate for the club's new coach.

The Demons will play their last home game of the year against Fremantle on Sunday, potentially the last at the MCG in Melbourne colours for free agents Aaron Davey, 30, and Colin Sylvia, 27.

Davey, who was substitute on Saturday night against Gold Coast, has averaged 10 possessions over his 17 games this year but would be in line for a major pay cut if he stays on.

Clisby offered three weeks

In all, there are question marks against the names of about 12 out-of-contract and listed players, which, combined with the 14 changes last year, could result in moving on more than half of the list in the past two years.

The futures will depend heavily on assessments from the club's new coach, with an appointment before the completion of the October trade period preferable.

While some recycled AFL players - which were brought in under the 'moneyball' philosophy of former coach Mark Neeld - have been busts, there is grounds for optimism surrounding prized youngsters Jack Viney, Jimmy Toumpas, Jesse Hogan and Dom Barry.

Mature-age additions Matt Jones, Dean Terlich and Dean Kent have also delivered this season.

The cashed-up Dees are also gunning for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Taylor Adams, with a lucrative long-term deal being prepared for the No. 13 draft pick.

Melbourne, led by new list chief Todd Viney, is battling hard to keep two of its most talented players Jack Watts and Sylvia.

Fremantle has tabled an offer to Watts, while Sylvia's finals ambitions would have to be satisfied at another club, with Melbourne looking at another long-term list rebuild.

Neeld hunted mature-age players from successful backgrounds but uncertainty surrounds the futures of backmen Tom Gillies (calf) and James Sellar and utility David Rodan.

Defender Joel MacDonald has played only one senior game this season. Utility Neville Jetta has managed four, in his fifth AFL campaign.

All five are believed to be unsigned for next season.

Shannon Byrnes has a year to run on his contract, while veteran Mark Jamar (foot) and Cam Pedersen have another two seasons remaining on their deals.

It is understood others out of contract at the end of the season include 2011 draftees Josh Tynan (injured) and Rory Taggert and backman Troy Davis.

The rookie list will also have new faces next season. After 17 games last year, James Magner has struggled to break into the senior side this season, playing two games. Tom Couch has been unseen this year.
