Melbourne legend Neale Daniher celebrates the Demons’ drought-breaking premiership

Melbourne won its first premiership in 57 years and a former coach and AFL fan favourite melted hearts with his reaction.

Neale Daniher couldn’t contain his joy at seeing the Demons win a flag.

Melbourne legend Neale Daniher has celebrated his old side’s drought-breaking AFL premiership in a heartwarming social media post.

After withstanding a tough showing from the Western Bulldogs in the first half, the Demons ran away with the grand final to claim a mammoth a 74-point victory.

The premiership is Melbourne’s first since 1964 and breaks the 57-year drought that has haunted Dees fans.

Daniher coached Melbourne for 228 games over 10 seasons and led the Demons to their last grand final in 2000, which they lost to Essendon.

The 60-year-old was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2013 and his illness was made public the following year.

Daniher has made it his life mission to increase awareness and raise funding for the incurable disease, co-founding the charity Fight MND.

The annual Queen’s Birthday match between Melbourne and Collingwood has been known as “The Big Freeze” since 2015 and is dedicated to raising money for research into finding a cure for MND.

Daniher has been following Melbourne’s finals campaign closely and was desperate to see his beloved Demons win a premiership.

After their dominant grand final win, he posted a photo of himself posing in front of a TV screen showing Melbourne celebrating with the premiership trophy.

With a red and blue scarf draped over his shoulders, Daniher was clearly delighted at the result and was smiling from ear to ear.

“Back of the bus baby! All Melbourne supporters rejoice,” he captioned his Instagram post.

That’s a sight for sore eyes, Demons fans.
