GARRY Lyon says Mark Neeld's position as Melbourne coach "absolutely" needs to be reviewed.

Lyon was on a sub-committee which helped appoint Neeld at the end of 2011.

But Lyon said the team’s woeful on-field performances this season warranted a coaching re-assessment, two years into Neeld’s three-year deal.

“I think it would absolutely need to be reviewed,” Lyon said on Triple M footy.

“You can’t have the situation and results and the manner in which the club are playing at the moment without coming under heavy scrutiny and heavy review.

“I don’t think the manner and the way the team is playing is acceptable at the moment. It’s been a year and half now.”

Lyon said the lack of improvement from the club’s young players under Neeld was particularly concerning.

Former Adelaide coach Neil Craig was also hired at the end of 2011 to help mentor and assist Neeld.

“The rate of development and lack of development if you like, and, the intensity of effort (is an issue),” he said.

“You would have to be accepting it was going to have to take some time .. but it is disappointing to see the uncontested style of footy that we see week after week.

“The lack of tackling and lack of effort disappoints me.”

The Melbourne great said he was "shattered" at the club’s predicament, with only one win for the season and facing another near $2 million loss.
