The hashtag #freeviney was trending nationally on Twitter this morning as fans continued to vent their disappointment – and some their anger – at the controversial verdict.
While former premiership star and Herald Sun commentator Shane Crawford simply tweeted: “Footy is officially a non contact sport.”

Despite the threat of fines, teammates, former and current AFL players weren’t shy to weigh in.
Viney’s teammate Jack Trengove simply tweeted the word “Interesting” and the #viney hashtag before later removing the tweet.
However, there are some who believe the decision was correct by the letter of the law, even if it flies in the face of the spirit of the game for many.
And while the debate rages, there’s always some memes and gags to lighten the mood.
