SuperCoach 2016: Melbourne’s best team of all time
SINCE the dawn of SuperCoach, Melbourne fans have been in the doldrums but the Demons may be finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
SINCE the dawn of SuperCoach, Melbourne fans have been in the doldrums but the Demons may be finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
A look the Melbourne’s best SuperCoach side doesn’t reveal any standout stars during a period where the club reached the finals just three times since Champion Data began recording points in 2003.
Instead, it’s a team filled with solid contributors rather than premium picks, best highlighted by Travis Johnstone being the leading scorer with an average of 110 points, although Jeff White would have held his own in the ruck with 107 points a game.
Cameron Bruce (108), Adem Yze (106), James McDonald (101) also averaged triple figures and there were seven players recorded 90-plus per game: Nathan Brown (98), Brad Green (98), Bernie Vince (97), Clint Bizzell (96), Brock McLean (92), Paul Wheatley (91) and Daniel Cross (90).
But Melbourne supporters should be excited about how this team could look in five years time.
Max Gawn is the second ruckman but his numbers are on an upward trend along with key forward Jesse Hogan and midfielder Vince, while Dom Tyson has been a prolific scorer the past three seasons.
Jack Viney is on his way towards premium status and who knows how good Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver could be.
