MELBOURNE is in the hunt to secure in-demand assistant coach Matthew Egan.

After missing out on new Pies’ assistant Brenton Sanderson, the Demons are one of several clubs trying to land Egan.

The 33-year-old is widely considered one of the most impressive young coaches in the game after his playing career was cruelly cut short by a navicular injury in 2007.

In his five years at Essendon, Egan has served as forward and backline coach before taking on the head of player development role this year.

In particular, Egan has been highly rated for his development with the young Bombers and as coach of its VFL affiliate this season.

The former Geelong key defender has strong ties with Melbourne’s key coaches.

He worked with new Melbourne senior coach Simon Goodwin at Essendon and was also coached by another Melbourne assistant, Brendan McCartney, at Geelong.

However a decision on his future may not be made for weeks.

Essendon announced on Thursday that Egan would seek a fresh start elsewhere.
