MELBOURNE’S young midfield warrior Angus Brayshaw gave the Demons consecutive Rising Star nominations as the club’s next breed finally begins to take charge.

The Dees failed to win a nomination last year but workhorse Brayshaw – who the club effectively received for departed free agent James Frawley (Hawthorn) – followed boom forward Jesse Hogan’s recognition last week.

The No.3 draft pick kicked a crucial second-quarter goal and then set up Jeff Garlett as the Dees slashed through six consecutive majors in Monday’s Queen’s Birthday loss to Collingwood.

Club legend Garry Lyon noted: “He is going to be a 200-gamer and leader of the Demons”.

Brayshaw, 19, finished with six tackles and 18 disposals in front of the biggest crowd he has played in front of while several recruiters said they would have used last year’s No.1 pick on the inside clearance king.

“Brayshaw looks like the player who could stand up and get you home on a Friday night at the MCG in a preliminary final,” one chief recruiter said.

“He’s got really strong leadership.”

Magpies premiership captain Nick Maxwell compared Brayshaw to Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin.

“He’s just so strong over the ball, strong at the contest and real steady when he uses it,” Maxwell said on Channel 7.

Brayshaw joins Hogan, Jack Viney and Tom McDonald as young Dees to win nominations with that quartet shaping as pivotal to coach-in-waiting Simon Goodwin’s era.

Last year’s No.2 pick Christian Petracca is recovering from a ruptured ACL and will be unveiled next season.

Brayshaw was a TAC Cup teammate and close friend of coach Paul Roos’ son Tyler last year, while his junior numbers – and maiden AFL season – have mirrored Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines.
