Angus Brayshaw details his steady road to recovery from concussion

ANGUS Brayshaw is back in full training and says his concussion symptoms have cleared after spending a month out of the game.

ANGUS Brayshaw is back in full training and says his concussion symptoms have cleared after spending a month out of the game.

The Melbourne onballer suffered two concussions early in the season and was told to rest for an “extended period”.

Brayshaw has detailed his road to recovery, which included gradually building up his training workloads without his symptoms flaring.

The No.3 draft pick won’t be considered for selection this week but should return to the Demons side in the back half of the season.

“Initially the way it works is you do a certain amount of exercise after your concussion,” Brayshaw said.

“So I’ll go for a jog, for example, and then I come back and rest and then I just go to the doctors and say if I’m feeling symptomatic.

“So headaches, I used to get a lot of headaches, nausea, that sort of stuff.

“If I do a certain amount of exercise and I feel good, then that’s when they step it up again and again and again and now I’m back full training.

“So the next step is to play a game of footy.”

Brayshaw said the Demons have taken a conservative approach because they “want me to play for 10 years and not 10 more games”.

He played 21 games in his debut 2015 season but just three this year because of the head knocks and a knee injury sustained in the pre-season.

Brayshaw told 3AW the more research conducted on concussion and the more the issue was discussed in the AFL community, the better.

“You’ve got 60 years to live after footy,” Brayshaw said.

“It (your brain) is not something you want to mess around with.”

The Demons play Sydney at the SCG on Sunday and then have a bye. Brayshaw could return to the AFL selection frame after that.
