Melbourne defender James Frawley says he’s unlikely to re-sign until he knows coaching plans

MELBOURNE’S inability to lock in Paul Roos’ successor is one of the factors behind defender James Frawley’s reluctance to re-sign.

THE failure of Melbourne to lock down a succession plan for life after Paul Roos is one of the factors behind defender James Frawley’s reluctance to re-sign.

Frawley, who becomes a restricted free agent at the end of the season, has put off contract talks because he wants to see how the year unfolds.

While stressing he was enjoying life under Roos — his seventh coach in eight years at Melbourne — the 25-year-old said that element of uncertainty about the next coach was an issue.

``It’s probably one of the factors,” Frawley said. “Hopefully this year or next year they find a nice new coach to take over from Roosy. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later,” Frawley said.

“[You] don’t want to rush it because if you don’t get the right bloke it’s not going to be any good anyway. [By] taking their time they have done the right thing,

“I just want to concentrate on footy for a bit and I’m looking forward to seeing how we go during the season and hopefully we get a few wins.

``I’m in no rush, we’ve got plenty of time to make the decision.”

Frawley joked that if Roos, who has signed on for two years with the option of a third, extended his contract now he’d do the same.

It’s believed Adelaide is waiting in the wings with a massive offer for Frawley who has played in just 31 wins out of 118 games with Melbourne since his debut in 2007.

He admitted to enjoying the spoils of victory on Friday night where the Demons upset Richmond in the NAB Challenge.

The key defender put down the instant success to the “vibe” Roos had created since his arrival last September.

“The boys are playing with a bit of freedom, they’re more relaxed and are just going out there and performing,” Frawley said.

``There is this vibe around the club, Roosy just instils confidence in the players.”

Frawley pointed out Jack Trengove’s performance against the Tigers as the perfect example of what the new environment has done already.

“You see Treds on Friday night, he had a form slump the last couple of years but on Friday night he comes out and has 35 touches,” he said.

``You could see it in his eyes that he was playing well, that he was confident and feeling good about himself.”
