Lance 'Buddy' Franklin escapes injury in car accident

UPDATE: HAWTHORN is not considering disciplinary action against Lance Franklin over his involvement in a car collision.

HAWTHORN superstar Lance "Buddy" Franklin has been involved in a car accident just weeks after he lost his licence for speeding.

The 25-year-old goalkicker was said to be shaken but unhurt after the incident on Yarra Blvd in Burnley just before 6pm.

The other driver, a 37-year old woman, needed treatment for an arm injury before being taken to the Alfred Hospital.

Franklin was behind the wheel when the accident happened, but his licence suspension - after being caught driving at 90km/h in a 50km/h zone - is not due to start until later this month.

Hawthorn media liaison Leah Mirabella this morning said the club considered Franklin's accident an honest error in judgment.

Ms Mirabella said the vehicles collided when both drivers attempted to merge into the same lane.

"Lance Franklin has informed the Club he was involved in a vehicle accident in the early evening on Monday," Hawthorn said in a statement last night.

"Lance was shaken but has not sustained injury in the accident, while the driver of the other vehicle has been treated for an arm injury."

Ms Mirabella said the club was not considering disciplinary action at this stage.

Franklin lost his licence for six months and was whacked with a $599 infringement and six demerit points when he was caught speeding in Brighton, describing himself as a "bloody idiot" on Twitter after the incident.

Road safety campaigner Norm Robinson will give a presentation to Hawthorn players this afternoon.

The leadership group had requested Franklin organise the presentation after he lost his licence.

Mr Robinson’s son, Luke, was speeding when he lost control of his car and crashed northwest of Geelong in 2010.

Mr Robinson said he hoped to speak to Franklin about his reckless behaviour behind the wheel.

"We'll be showing them (the players) our road trauma presentation and some stats and some ideas on why people have crashes," he told 3AW.

"They get to meet Luke through a slideshow and we explain how Luke’s crash happened. So we give them basic information that they possibly didn’t have prior to seeing us. That’s pretty much what we do and obviously have a chat with Lance one-on-one and just reiterate some of the things that we’ll talk today."

Mr Robinson said he hoped to also speak to Franklin, who he descibred as a "pretty decent bloke", about last night's crash.

"Buddy’s in a situation where he’s made two mistakes over the last two weeks. I don’t know whether it was his fault last night or not, but he’s got the opportunity to learn something from it," Mr Robinson said.

"Not everyone does. Luke’s car accident was his first ever crash so he never learnt from his mistake so that's why we try and do - make people learn from mistakes."

Franklin has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since Round 15.

He joined teammates for a training session this morning, showing no signs of last night's car accident.

He remains in doubt for the Hawks clash against Port Adelaide on Sunday in Launceston.
