A former premiership star has put the selfish mindset of an AFL club in the firing line after they all suffered a monumental brain fade.

Well that’s embarrassing.

The Brisbane Lions pounced out of the gates against the GWS Giants, but the home team weren’t doing themselves any favours.

After kicking the opening three goals of the game, the Lions once again charged towards goal through skipper Dayne Zorko.

His long bomb inside 50 was pulled down by Lincoln McCarthy just 15m out from goal on a slight angle.

But it was what happened next that would have left Giants coach Leon Cameron seeing red and ready to rip into his playing group.

As McCarthy slowing got up off the deck, every Giants player dropped their head and turned away from the contest. Leaving an unmarked Lachie Neale to get the handpass and stroll into an open goal. Extending the Lions’ lead out to 4.2 (26) to 0.2 (2).

“That’s embarrassing,” Dwayne Russell said on Fox Footy.

“That is embarrassing, spot on Dwayne. That’s a team that’s starting to think individually. Starting to think about their own game and how am I going, how do I keep myself out of the rut,” David King added.

“The back six are shell-shocked. They are looking for a body, looking for their opponent. They’re not playing proactive footy at all, you can’t do that.

“You can’t go into your shell because the scoreboard reads the way it does.

“That is unforgivable.”

The Giants managed to turn their form around in the later stages of the opening term before rebounding emphatically in the third quarter to head into the final term down 10.6 (66) to 8.5 (53).
