‘Knows exactly what he’s done’: Daicos’ surprising ‘selfish’ acts blasted

Teammates were not happy with Brownlow Medal favourite Nick Daicos after an act David King says could “fracture” Collingwood

Dual premiership player David King says Nick Daicos needs to cut back on moments of selfishness in his game or risk a “fracture” in Collingwood’s premiership tilt.

The Pies lost just their third game of the year on Friday night, this time at the hands of arch-rival Carlton at the MCG.

King said some passages of play from Daicos warranted self-reflection for the 20-year-old, who is set to sign a contract extension through until the end of 2029 in the coming days.

“If you want to win the Brownlow, you’ll probably win the Brownlow,” King said on Fox Footy’s The First Crack of the Brownlow Medal favourite.

“If you want to win a premiership, you could win a premiership.

“But if you’re going to go down this path of burning your teammates, things will dry up very quickly for you.”

King showed vision of Daicos feigning a handball to Jamie Elliott before opting to turn back towards goal and snap at it himself, which was touched on the goal line by Jacob Weitering.

It was followed by a passage where Daicos received the ball 45 metres out from goal and overlooked a number of his teammates, instead opting to go for goal once more.

“That’s a give every day of the week to Jamie Elliott and he is a quality finisher. This one here, he knows exactly what’s around him every moment. He burns number one ... he burns De Goey with a little chip pass, he burns Howe on the lead and then he resets and goes again. He burns McCreery at the top of the goalsquare and they’re not happy about it,” King said.

“He (Daicos) knows. You can tell by the look on his face that he knows exactly what he’s done to four of his teammates.

“I just say plain and simple work out what you want to do. Do you want to have individual success or team success, because you’re that important to this team.

“You could fracture the whole thing in a heartbeat with this sort of selfish play.”

Collingwood takes on Hawthorn next week before clashes with Geelong, Brisbane and Essendon to conclude the regular season.

A week after being well-held by the Power for a half by Willem Drew, Daicos had 28 disposals (nine contested) at 54 per cent efficiency, kicking two behinds to go with a goal assist and nine score involvements.
