A MONTH ago veteran super coach Kevin Sheedy revealed he wanted to stay on at the helm of the fledgling club "if the club wants me".

Sheedy's wish is about to be granted with the 64-year-old grandfather set to be reappointed coach of the GWS Giants for next season.

The on-field performance of the young team has impressed Giants Chairman Tony Shepherd so much he wants to extend the current coaching arrangement with Sheedy as head coach and Mark Williams as his assistant past this season.

"We would like to retain both of them," Shepherd told The Daily Telegraph.

"We regard Sheedy and Williams as a very formidable combination."

The Giants have won just one match in their debut season, against fellow expansion team the Gold Coast Suns, but are considered to be well advanced in player development for a team which has fielded 27 debutants already.

"We're really happy with the way Kevin has gone in his return to coaching," Shepherd said. "His role is wider than coaching and he has been great in all aspects.

"We believe Kevin and Mark Williams have worked extremely well together and as far as we are concerned the team has exceeded expectations on the field."

It has been widely expected Williams would take over from Sheedy at the end of this season but the underlying feeling at the board level of the Giants is if "it ain't broke don't fix it".
