Kane Cornes has potted Patrick Dangerfield for his performance at the AFL Players Association Awards on Wednesday night.

Dangerfield was front and centre at the awards night in Melbourne as president of the AFLPA on the night where Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli was crowned the players’ king.

The Bulldogs captain edged out fellow Brownlow Medal frontrunners Nick Daicos and Zak Butters to claim the Leigh Matthews Trophy, becoming the sixth player to receive the honour multiple times after he also won in 2021.

However, the attention on Friday morning turned towards’ Dangerfield’s performance in front of the microphone.

Cornes and Fox Footy analyst David King had a good, light-hearted chuckle about the Brownlow medalist’s punchlines speaking during a segment on SEN Breakfast.

Cornes said Dangerfield should “stick to his strengths”, suggesting one of the gags left those in the audience in an awkward spot of feeling obliged to laugh.

“I was loving Patrick Dangerfield with the Players’ Association Awards,” Cornes said.

“We know Danger is a jack of all trades really, but what he wasn’t was funny.”

He said one joke about the AFL commission made people feel like they had to laugh.

“There were just a few murmurs,” he said.

“You know when you’re in the room and it’s not that funny, but I feel like I have to laugh. So if that wasn’t enough, he’s doubled down on it.”

Dangerfield’s initial joke referenced the recent stories that he had been forced to rule out taking up a position on the AFL commission — have reportedly been approached to take up the office.

“Thanks Jonesy, you missed me in the commission welcomes, but I’ll forgive you this year,” Dangerfield said.

“And if Andrew (Dillon) is in the room, I think it’s announced next April. We’ll kick it off then.”

Dangerfield’s second gag took a shot the luxuries being enjoyed by those sitting at the official AFL commission table at the awards gala.

“It’s great to see Gil (McLachlan) front and centre,” he said.

“I’m sitting on the AFLPA table. I think it’s Table 97. If anyone needs us, we’re right at the back near the bins.”

King had a chuckle at Cornes’ criticism, but said Dangerfield’s one-liners weren’t the “worst”.

The North Melbourne great also enjoyed sharing the moment he roasted Cornes during the All-Australian team announcement event which also featured on Fox Footy on Wednesday night.

When speaking about the Daicos brothers — Nick and Josh — becoming the first brothers to be selected in the same All-Australian team since Cornes and his brother Chad were both selected 16 years ago, King took a crack at his radio colleague.

“They have to work out which one of them is going to be liked and which one of them is going to be Kane,” he said with a laugh.

Cornes told King the gag was a “low blow”.

King said he needed to provide some giggles for the audience because the room needed it following Dangerfield’s gags.

“It was a low blow,” he said.

“Danger had set the room back and I had to try and get people to laugh.”
