Jordan De Goey linked to Carlton in bombshell trade revelation

Jordan De Goey has opened the door to a doomsday trade scenario for Collingwood with rival Carlton named in a stunning report.

Carlton is reportedly “keen” on negotiating a deal for Collingwood star Jordan De Goey in a potential doomsday for the Magpies.

Footy legends Tim Watson and Garry Lyon have led the speculation surrounding the bombshell scenario with the former Bombers star claiming there are whispers in footy circles that the Blues are trying to work out how they could pry De Goey away from the Pies in the 2020 AFL Trade Period.

Watson’s stunning claim came after Lyon revealed on SEN Breakfast radio the Blues still have a salary cap war chest to lure another star to the club this year, coming just days after Bombers star Adam Saad and Giants star Zac Williams both announced their intentions to join Carlton.

De Goey is uncontracted beyond the 2020 season, but has indicated to Collingwood privately and in media interviews that he wants to re-sign with the club.

No contract has been signed.

It’s why the claims from Lyon and Watson would be frightening for Collingwood supporters to hear.

“My ‘8:30 man’ reckons that Carlton have been stockpiling salary cap room for a number of years now, which is why they can make the big offers to Zac Williams and Adam Saad,” Lyon said.

“He’s saying they’re not finished ... they’re not finished.

Jordan De Goey has a lot on his plate.

“They’re asking the question of some big names and some big, big names are asking the question of them.”

Watson said a source has told him the Blues are “keen” on De Goey.

“After you told me about your ‘8:30 man’ I went to my ‘9:45’ man and I said, ‘What are you hearing?’” Watson told SEN Breakfast on Friday.

“And he said, ‘Yes, Carlton are keen on (Jordan) De Goey and I said, ‘How can they possibly get that deal done?’ and he said, ‘With great difficulty but they are looking at him as a possible recruit as well’.

“I can’t see how they’re going to get that deal done.”

De Goey is negotiating with Collingwood without the assistance of an accredited manager with reports claiming it is one of the reasons the deal with the Pies is being held up.

Meanwhile, Geelong’s long-term interest in Giants star Jeremy Cameron is reported to have intensified in recent weeks with reports suggesting the club is very much in the race to steal Cameron away from the Giants.

Cameron’s management have reportedly knocked back a first offer from the Giants, leaving the door open for the Cats to swoop in.

Channel 7 AFL reporter Tom Browne says Cameron has an offer in front of him from the Giants worth approximately $700,000 a season over five years — a total of $3.5 million — but reports his manager Alex McDonald has been in contact with the Cats in “recent weeks and recent days”.

Jordan De Goey is backing himself in with contract negotiations.

“Jeremy Cameron’s management are in continued discussions again with the Cats, which is interesting,” Browne told the Triple M Hot Breakfast.

“The Giants are sticking to an offer at the moment, I understand, of five years at $700,000, which is good money.

“But on the open market there will be other clubs interested beyond that.”

Cameron has been the Giants’ leading goalkicker every season since they entered the AFL but booted just 24 majors in 17 appearances this year as GWS bombed out to miss the finals.

Last year Cameron averaged 7.8 score involvements and 3.2 goals a game. In 2020, those numbers have dropped to 6.3 and 1.9.

The 2019 Coleman Medallist is the game’s highest-paid player, according to an investigation by the Herald Sun, and was set to earn $1.5m in 2020 as part of a heavily back-ended contract before COVID-19 slashed player wages across the board.
