Jack Ginnivan made his debut for Hawthorn against Essendon at the MCG and while he delighted fans, Cornes wasn’t a fan of him electing to wear long sleeves.

Cornes who often calls out players far and wide over tiny, infantile details, torched the small forward and believes his lacklustre debut for his new club all came down to the fact he didn’t wear a normal AFL guernsey.

“I’m big on one percenters right … if it’s 30 degrees at the MCG, don’t wear a long sleeve jumper,” Cornes said on Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.

“Now I may be reading too much into it, but he had 12 touches in the first half and I did not see him after half time.

“I don’t know if he overheated. You try cool yourself down with ice vests, we’ve got clubs that have freezers to keep yourself cool and he’s running around the MCG in that.”

Despite Cornes’ insistence, his fellow panel members weren’t buying the excuse with Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd delivering the first clip.

“Some of the great players have worn long sleeves Kane, if I had a list of things to blame … that would be about 100 on it,” Lloyd said.

“It might be that his team got smashed, that he’s not as fit as he might need to be”

Kanes quickly interjected: “You don’t think he overheated?”

It was then Tony Jones who delivered the most brutal barb to Cornes over his Ginnivan hot-take.

“Kane can I just ask, do you ever when you’re doing your 42km run after the show. Do you ever think to yourself at any stage, wish I hadn’t of gone with that?” Jones said.

But again, Cornes wasn’t having it and went back in on the new Hawks recruit.

“No. I’m big on preparation and to think that it’s 28 degrees, everybody is cramping up and he’s touched the ball two times in the second half. And I go I wonder if he was hot,” Cornes pondered.

It’s not the first time Cornes has gone after Ginnivan, with the former Port player going after him during the pre-season.

Cornes swiped the Hawks recruit for skipping the club’s first week of pre-season, despite not being contractually required to be there.

The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph tweeted: “Ginnivan had played five weeks of footy more this season than the Hawks boys so Sam Mitchell directed him to have another week off for a physical and mental break. Back next week to start training. It wasn’t his call.”

The explanation from Ralph didn’t go down well with Cornes however, as he doubled down.

“Five extra weeks? Do you mean 3 extra games in which he played 13% and 25% game time in two of those weeks?” Cornes said.

“I’m sure they wouldn’t have turned him away if he insisted on turning up … Would have been a nice first impression.”

The Bombers kicked their season off in style after taking care of business against the Hawks as they claimed the 17.5 (107) to 11.17 (83) victory.

Jake Stringer kicked four goals and Archie Perkins starred in the midfield among ample positive signs from Brad Scott’s side, with a hamstring setback to Zach Reid the only sour note.

Perkins produced arguably his best AFL game yet, racking up 24 disposals with 12 tackles and two goals.

Stringer meanwhile was back to his explosive best.

He booted a game-high four goals and simply looked dangerous whenever he went near the ball. And perhaps most importantly, Stinger looked fit and healthy after a couple of down years disrupted by injury.
