‘I’ll dodge them’: AFL club becomes trade period joke

The AFL Trade Period is over and lost in the madness of the final minutes are some big stories that have gone overlooked.

The big winners and losers of the AFL Trade Period are becoming clearer by the hour after the madness of the final minutes on Wednesday night.

There were eight deals cut in the final hours of the annual carve-up, where Josh Dunkley ended up as a Lion, Tom Mitchell became a Magpie, Lachie Hunter is a Demon and Rory Lobb is now a Bulldog.

The Western Bulldogs were the most active team in the final moments, sending out midfielders Dunkley and Hunter while nabbing Lobb from Fremantle.

Hawthorn’s clear out was complete with Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara being dealt away with O’Meara ultimately being sent back to Western Australia and joining the Dockers.

The Bulldogs have been potted by commentators across the game for the late drama surrounding Dunkley with the best and fairest winner’s agent Liam Pickering scoffing at the club’s refusal to budge on deals offered by Brisbane.

The Bulldogs were left “staggered” last week when the Lions demanded a series of lower-round draft picks on top of allowing Dunkley to leave.

It has now been suggested the addition of a future fourth round draft pick being tossed into the deal was enough for the Bulldogs to pull the trigger in the final minutes.

Pickering told AFL Trade Radio the haggling left Dunkley in an uncomfortable position, laughing about the measly fourth-round pick being argued about.

“It was just a future pick, a fourth I think. It dragged on a bit longer than it should’ve,” he said.

“It was great to get it done. There was a bit of haggling or whatnot towards the end, but I’m really happy for Josh, he’s going to the club he wanted to go to.

“I think it could’ve been done the first thing this morning, to be honest, but haggling over a pick that’s in the future and in the fourth round that’ll probably never get used anyway, but that’s what we do.”

When asked if he had spoken to the Bulldogs following the frenzied finish, he responded with a quip: “Nah, they’re way down the other end, it’s in alphabetical order, so I’ll probably dodge them tonight”.

The battleground surrounding the fourth round pick has particularly raised eyebrows after coach Luke Beveridge said at the club’s best and fairest award that the Lions would have to “pony up” to get a deal done.

Leading football reporter Damian Barrett also appeared to pot the Bulldogs.

“That was a pretty tame version of what I believe Liam Pickering may have been saying behind the scenes around this,” he said to afl.com.au.

“A future fourth round pick. If that was the clincher, if that was them ‘ponying up’, then well done. Because it took until the final minute for it to get done. The Dogs weren’t happy how he tried to leave two years ago and they made him stay and that’s fair enough, they contracted him two years ago. He wasn’t contracted this year. He would have been shattered to walk back into the football club. He wasn’t going back.”

Dunkley follows Lachie Hunter’s last-minute departure from the Bulldogs with the former best and fairest moving to the Demons. Zaine Cordy and Josh Schache also left. The club was able to seal the deal to get star ruckman Rory Lobb into the club from Fremantle.

Hawthorn slashes top-end talent

The Hawks have been slammed for a ruthless trade period strategy that has resulted in a stack of senior players departing.

Former Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell has joined Collingwood and Jaeger O’Meara was dealt to Fremantle. Both of the late moves failed to net the Hawks significant draft capital.

Mitchell got them two third-rounders and an ex-first round pick in Cooper Stephens from Geelong, who has promise; O’Meara got them Lloyd Meek and a future second.

It comes after the retirements of Ben McEvoy and Liam Shiels and delisting of Kyle Hartigan, totaling 1181 games of experience out the door.

On Thursday morning there was condemnation for Hawthorn’s apparent decision to force O’Meara and Mitchell out the door.

Barrett said on afl.com.au, O’Meara wanted to stay at Hawthorn with the prospect of a trade only beginning to be seriously discussed in the last days of the trade period.

“There’s a level of hurt here for how he’s been treated by the club that got him across from the Gold Coast Suns and made him leader because of his qualities.

“For two years in a row he’s been forced to endure conversations around where he’s going to be and this year he’s out.”

Journalist Josh Gabelich also criticised the Hawks for how it treated the two senior players.

“It’s happened too quickly,” he said on AFL Daily.

“We saw it last year with Luke Breust – he had a 48 hour window and he stayed. Jaeger O’Meara gave it the all clear in the end. I just don’t know if this is the way to treat two players, who have been really significant members of that team.”

Here is a full list of all the completed deals by all 18 clubs - and the draft picks they have been left with.
