Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has blasted Brisbane Lions recruit Joe Daniher for his goal celebration during Saturday evening’s clash against the Sydney Swans at the Gabba.

Daniher signed a three-year deal with the Lions last October — reported to be worth $2.5 million — following an eight-season stint with the Essendon Bombers.

Playing his maiden AFL game in Brisbane colours, the 27-year-old got his 2021 season off to a flyer with a superb goal early in the opening term.

After cleaning up a loose ball inside 50 and evading Swans defender Dane Rampe, Daniher booted a goal from a 45-degree angle to extend Brisbane’s lead to 18.

The spearhead passionately grabbed his new jersey and celebrated with his ecstatic teammates.

Daniher finished the round one contest with two goals and two behinds as the Lions suffered an embarrassing 19.11 (125) to 14.10 (94) loss to the Swans.

Speaking on AFL Media’s Round So Far, Cornes was less than impressed with Daniher’s goal celebration, which the 38-year-old labelled “arrogant”.

“I’d be filthy if I was an Essendon fan and I saw this,” Cornes said

“It’s such a famous name, and they (Essendon) were pretty good to him, I thought.

“They stuck with him during some pretty frustrating times, they paid him big money, they were patient with him.

“To see that, I don’t know, it’s a little bit of arrogance.”

Daniher was also put on report during the club’s season opener for carelessly flinging his elbow back and striking Rampe in the head.

The 2017 All-Australian played 108 games for the Bombers after making his AFL debut in 2013, kicking 191 goals for the club.

He was Essendon’s leading goal-kicker for four consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2017.

Brisbane will next face the Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium on Friday evening, with both clubs coming off shock defeats.
