‘Horrific’ AFL ANZAC guernsey clash slammed

An AFL great has called for a quick change to the competition’s traditional ANZAC clash with a little less than a week to solve the problem.

The traditional AFL ANZAC clash between Collingwood and Essendon is set to possibly have the biggest crowd in the world during the COVID era but one former great has trashed the strips the sides will be wearing.

A crowd of 71,000 is expected for ANZAC DAY between two 1-4 teams in Collingwood and Essendon, which would eclipse the 68,000 at two T20 International between India and England.

The AFL won’t know whether stadium attendances will be lifted to 100 per cent for the ANZAC clash and the ANZAC eve clash between Melbourne and Richmond.

But at the end of Fox Footy’s On the Couch, Riewoldt took aim at the ANZAC clash between the two under performing sides, not because of their form but rather their guernseys for the match.

The Essendon guernsey has poppies replacing the red sash, while Collingwood’s will be predominantly black with the white stripes featuring weaved rosemary sticks.

The problem comes in that both teams have a heap of black on the guernseys.

It’s believed one of the issues will be resolved by the Bombers wearing white shorts, but a photo of Scott Pendlebury and Dyson Heppell made it clear the was a bit of a clash.

There is plenty of black in those strips.

Riewoldt called for the strips to be changed, despite just days left before the clash.

“Flagging this on a Monday so we can fix it – we’ve got time to fix it,” he said.

“This is a horrific jumper clash, and it‘s gonna be hard to tell the teams apart.

“It’s Monday – find a way, because we can’t have them rolling up (like that).”

But former Demons skipper and club great Garry Lyon said it would not be changed before the game on Sunday.

“They’ve got no time to fix it. They’re not gonna make new jumpers,” he said.

“I love it but they won’t do it.”

Riewoldt wasn’t the only one either with Triple M Footy and SEN also posting the clash.

SEN’s Sam Edmunds also revealed that the clash had been signed off by the AFL.
