BILLY Connolly's appreciation of AFL football was always going to be amusingly different.

That it involved clowning with Greater Western Sydney coach-turned-celebrity interviewer Kevin Sheedy added to the mirth, a sprightly 64-year-old questioning a lively 69-year-old.

"Why are there no sleeves," mused Connolly, a passionate Glasgow Celtic fan used to his footballers wearing proper outfits.

"We work on our guns (biceps)," quipped Sheedy. "We learnt that off Braveheart and Rob Roy."

"And then there is the psychiatrist who tells you whether you've scored or not," continued Connolly, unable to fathom goal umpires and the medical attire they once wore before dressing more casually in recent years.

"Any sport that employs a guy in a white coat has to be seriously looked at. All you need is the van with the square wheels to pick you up after the game."They do that don't they?

"Then the guys with no sleeves run up and abuse them. Put your sleeves back on you jerk."

That was the cue for Sheedy to present Connolly with a flaming orange GWS Giants jumper

"We're going to make you our first international Jock," said Sheedy.

"Woohoo, and no sleeves!" enthused Connolly.

"They come sleeveless. I thought they cut them off."

The biggest surprise Sheedy received during the interview at Sydney's Hilton Hotel was Connolly's height when the silver Scot rose to receive the jumper.

He stood significantly taller than Sheedy's 180cm.

"This guy is actually the perfect size for an AFL player. We missed him somewhere," said Sheedy.

"How would you like a centre half-back with those eyes?"

In Australia to promote Disney's latest animated movie Brave, in which Connolly is the voice of King Fergus, he is unable to stay for the Giants' match this Saturday against Richmond at Skoda Stadium.

Connolly has to "pop" back to New Zealand to continue filming The Hobbit. He has been to Australia more than a dozen times.

During the interview Sheedy compared recently retired Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling with a character in Brave because of his flaming red hair.

"Australians have got a thing about red hair, and why do they call them Bluey? It's weird," said Connolly.

"We're a weird mob here," fired back Sheedy.
