Gold Coast Suns put drinks on ice for end of the season

THE Suns did not toast their breakthrough win over Carlton after Campbell Brown led a players' pact to put the celebratory drinks on ice.

THE Suns did not toast their breakthrough win over Carlton after Campbell Brown led a players' pact to put the celebratory drinks on ice.

Brown may have lost his title as a Suns leader, but clearly retains his status within the club after demanding the alcohol ban in the wake of the club's third win of the season.

The Suns are finishing their second season in the AFL on a high note - last week they re-signed key forward Charlie Dixon, and The Courier-Mail believes emerging pair Liam Patrick and Kyal Horsley have also agreed to two-year deals.

Brown, a Hawthorn premiership player, has been determined to set the right example since landing in a Thai jail in the off-season after a drunken brawl on a footy trip.

He was stripped of his position on the leadership group, although Suns officials have maintained that decision was made because of his occasional lapses in discipline on the field.

He was suspended for four matches early in the club's first season for clashes against Western Bulldogs' Callan Ward and Barry Hall.

The Suns players were given the green light to celebrate the round 22 victory over Carlton, provided they stuck to a 1am curfew. But Brown rose to his feet in the rooms and called on all players to stay away from pubs and nightclubs until the end of the season.

"My thinking behind it was, we've had a good win and it could be tempting to go out and have a good time," he said.

"But I just really want us to see out the season, I just thought it was pretty important that we shut up shop."

Hawk midfielder Jordan Lewis and Geelong utility Paul Chapman will play in the final round after the match review panel cleared them.

Lewis conceded a free after tackling Sydney's Luke Parker to the ground in the first term of Saturday's match at the SCG. But the panel ruled that the force Lewis used was below what was needed for a charge to be laid.

Chapman took Western Bulldogs defender Dylan Addison high with a tackle on Sunday but again the panel ruled in his favour.

After missing three matches with a knee injury, Sydney may know as soon as today whether supreme tackler Jude Bolton is fit to take on Geelong this Saturday.
