‘Go and get stuffed’: Fitzy still fuming during live TV roast

Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald is still having a hard time digesting that one of his biggest claims to fame has now been ripped away from him.

Ryan Fitzgerald is still steaming.

The former footy star turned popular Nova radio host took to Twitter on the weekend to reveal he was filthy about losing an AFL goal-kicking record, and he was venting again on Tuesday night as TV colleagues laughed at his expense.

“Fitzy” previously held the record for most consecutive goals kicked in an AFL career before scoring a behind, sitting equal with Zach Merrett and Will Snelling on 11. But on Sunday, Brisbane’s Darcy Fort slotted his 12th straight major during the Lions’ win over Sydney to take top spot.

Fitzgerald — with tongue planted firmly in cheek — complained on Twitter and radio about being usurped, and he was at it again when appearing on Fox Sports program The Back Page on Tuesday night.

“You’re really going to start with this on the show are you, Tony?” Fitzgerald asked host Tony Squires. “Is that the way you want to start the show, everybody? Because I’m in for a fight.

“Can I actually be honest with you — I had no idea I held that record. And you know if I actually knew, I would have brought out my own merchandise range.

“Everyone would have known about it every second day but I had no idea until the weekend and everyone was messaging me going, ‘This bloke’s about to break your record’.

“I was just a bit upset. This guy will go on to have a decorated career and this is the only thing I can hang my hat on and he stuffed it.

“He could have tied with us and we could all have shared in the record but Darcy Fort, you can go and get stuffed.”

Fitzgerald famously kicked five goals on debut for the Sydney Swans and finished with 18 goals from 23 games before injury cruelly ended his career.

Playing footage from his five-goal haul in the red and white on The Back Page, Squires joked the former forward should never have held the goal streak in the first place, suggesting his third major on that night against St Kilda should have been ruled a behind because it was touched by a defender on the line.

A graphic then appeared on screen crossing out Fitzgerald’s 11 straight goals and changing it to two as the panel laughed along.

“You b*****d!” Fitzgerald chuckled.

Fellow panellist Robert Craddock rubbed salt into the wound, saying: “Fitzy, I hate to embarrass you, but now that’s gone, what’s your career highlight now?”

Fitzgerald joked he has the record for most “sprays” from a coach in one season, referencing his well-known testy relationship with former Swans mentor Rodney Eade.
