Geelong Cats star Gary Ablett Jr. welcomes son in Instagram post

Geelong Cats fans are already salivating at the prospect of the 2037 AFL draft and the third generation of the AFL’s top dynasty.

EXPLAINER: Can Ablett be the difference-maker for the Cats?

Gary Ablett Jr and his wife Jordan have revealed the birth of their first child on Instagram.

Their son was born on Tuesday with the family deciding to withhold the name on social media.

Both Gary and Jordan posted identical messages with different photos to celebrate the arrival of their son, posting: “Family — where life begins and love never ends... Our beautiful baby boy is finally here.”

The pair announced Jordan’s pregnancy in July but wanted to keep the secret as long as they could.

“We’re both excited to announce that we are expecting our first child. It’s hard to put into words just how happy we are,” Ablett told AFL.com.au at the time.

“We’ve known this for a few months now, but decided that we wanted to keep it between just the two of us and our families for as long as we could.”

The Ablett’s were also not very subtle when announcing the pregnancy, with his son no doubt set to feel the pressure from AFL circles to follow in his dad and grandad’s footsteps.

The 35-year-old Ablett started his career in 2002 with Geelong and won premierships in 2007 and 2009, the year he also won his first Brownlow Medal.

In 2010, he became the inaugural captain of the Gold Coast Suns.

Although he won a second Brownlow in 2013, he battled injury throughout his time in Queensland.

At the end of the 2017 season, he was traded back to Geelong after threatening to quit AFL if the Suns didn’t allow him to return to Melbourne.

Jordan admitted she had few issues in her pregnancy compared to other women’s stories.

“I’m feeling really well to be honest,” she said. “I’ve had a relatively smooth pregnancy, especially after hearing other women’s stories, I can’t really complain too much.”

The Cats have almost 30 eligible father-son picks from their incredible premiership run between 2007 and 2011.

But as Ablett has played 211 games with Geelong and 110 games with Gold Coast, there could be a bidding war between the teams in 18 years.
