Footy icon Paul Roos’ staggering roast over AFL club ‘stain’

Swans legend Paul Roos has turned a flamethrower on an AFL club after it gave a rival team an “F you” that’s left them “stained”.

The possible three-way trade for Houston

AFL icon Paul Roos has taken a staggering swipe at Hawthorn over the club’s 2024 Trade Period gamble.

The Hawks last week threw a major curve ball into the mix after they cut off negotiations with West Coast and did a deal with Carlton.

According to reports, Hawthorn simply got tired of waiting for West Coast to pull the trigger on a deal that would have resulted in West Coast star Tom Barrass joining the Hawks.

Carlton reportedly came from the clouds to snap up Hawthorn’s pick 14 in exchange for the Blues’ future first and second round picks.

The surprise deal left Barrass and Richmond’s Liam Baker in limbo.

The Eagles were reportedly intent on using the Hawks’ pick they’d been offered in order to secure a deal with Richmond that would allow Baker to move west.

Wednesday night’s trade deadline is now fast approaching and it appears very possible that Barrass will be denied his wish to move to the Hawks.

The risky business is something legendary Swans premiership coach Roos doesn’t support.

“This is a slap in the face from Hawthorn. They’re going, ‘F you, we’re going to get him anyway’,” Roos told the ABC AFL Daily podcast.

“If Hawthorn misses out on Barrass it’s a bonehead decision, an absolute bonehead decision.

“It stains them with the managers. This is what people don’t understand. If Hawthorn don’t do the deal for Barrass, let me tell you, the next time a Hawthorn person rings up (to discuss) a player who’s contracted, let me tell you what the discussion is going to be: ‘Not interested’.

“Some clubs are really easy to deal with, and the managers know that. The managers dictate when players will go and where they go.

“This is a stain on the Hawthorn Football Club if the Barrass deal doesn’t get done by Wednesday.”

The Hawks have now been left trying to put another trade package together to satisfy the Eagles, but the Hawks are running low on picks.

According to reports, the Hawks’ latest offer is a future first round and a future second round pick in exchange for Barrass and the Eagles’ future third round pick.

There has been happier news for Baker in recent days.

It was speculated last week the Eagles’ failure to secure the Hawks’ No. 14 pick opened the door for Fremantle to try and snatch Baker up from under the Eagles’ nose.

It was speculated Fremantle was willing to part with Picks 10, 11 and 18 in a deal with Richmond for Baker and star forward Shai Bolton.

But AFL Media journalist Cal Twomey reported Baker still seemed destined to land at West Coast.

“Things are progressing on a deal for Baker at the Eagles,” Twomey told AFL Trade Radio.

“He still wants to get to West Coast, despite seeing a spanner in the works with the Hawthorn deal (with Carlton) last week.

“I think we’ll see some progress on that over the next 24 hours.”

The other big news to emerge from the AFL trade table was Port Adelaide’s decision to reportedly walk away from a three team mega-trade with the Gold Coast and Collingwood.

Dan Houston was on the brink of being a Collingwood player, before the Power decided to pursue other options for the All-Australian, who has requested to be traded despite having a long term contract with Power.

The proposed three-team trade would have seen Collingwood land Houston and pick 58 while the Power would’ve walked away with picks 13, 29 and 36 along with Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards and Rory Atkins.

The Suns would’ve finished the trade with John Noble, Pick 39 and two future first-round picks (one from Port, one from Collingwood).

Port Adelaide rejecting the offer now leaves Houston back in limbo with two days to go in the AFL’s Trade Period.
