In the opening quarter, a kick from St Kilda’s Jack Lonie sailed towards goal where it went through the hands of Tim Membrey before bouncing through the goal.

As the replay was shown on the screen, Channel 7’s Brian Taylor was adamant Membrey’s pinky finger on his left hand had made contact with the ball.

“Looks like the little finger on the left hand, it looks like there’s a little flick,” Taylor said.

Luke Darcy in the commentary box agreed with Taylor but questioned if the vision was definitive enough to overturn the goal umpires on field call.

After a lengthy review the decision was made to stick with the goal umpires decision of a goal.

Fans watching on were left up in arms by the review and not picking up on the apparent touch from Membrey.

The goal gave the Saints three in the opening quarter and saw them head into the quarter time break holding a 10-point advantage over the Eagles.

A win from either team will effectively seal a spot in the finals with the intensity in the contest through the roof from the opening bounce.

Last month the review system came under fire when Melbourne’s Christian Petracca was awarded a controversial goal against St Kilda with the venue not having goal line technology.

The league announced the next day that every venue for the remainder of the season will include goal line technology cameras after the league dropped the ball in Alice Springs.
