Footy fans all make the same joke after Collingwood’s loss to the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns snatched an incredible win over Collingwood, leaving fans all making the same joke about the Magpies.

The Gold Coast Suns withstood a remarkable Collingwood comeback to grab a priceless six-point win that puts them on track for a first AFL finals berth.

The expansion side is yet to reach September in its 15-year history, but the Suns’ 10.9 (69) to 8.15 (63) win solidifies their place in the top eight under Damien Hardwick, with many fans left making the same joke about the Pies.

Midway through the third quarter, the Pies had only registered 10 behinds and zero goals, with scores of fans watching on mocking Collingwood’s “jet lag” in a rare game away from the MCG.

Trailing by 40 points early in the third quarter, Craig McRae’s side launched a sensational turnaround, kicking seven goals to one to grab the lead.

The Suns were all at sea before goals from Ben Long and Noah Anderson stopped the bleeding and allowed them to grab their 11th win of the season.

The Pies missed shot after shot as they went goalless at halftime for the first time since 2021.

Anthony Hudson understated on Fox Footy: “The frustration is starting to show now.”

Their woes seemed to be personified when Darcy Moore took a contested mark and found Josh Daicos on the wing, who drove the ball inside 50m towards Mason Cox.

The big ruckman drew a free kick and Nick Daicos opted to play on, missing from about 30 metres out on a slight angle.

“Nick Daicos took the advantage and he missed,” Hudson said.

Jonathan Brown added: “You know you’re having a shocker, Nick Daicos plays on with advantage and still misses.

“Ten behinds, this is unbelievable this scoreline. Imagine you just switched on the TV.”

It was left to veteran Tim Membrey to finally break that long drought when he kicked truly midway through the third quarter.

“They’ve got to eventually get one, but the increasing pressure on the next guy having a shot with so many missing,” Leigh Matthews said.

“Fifteen minutes into the third quarter, Collingwood are celebrating a goal like it’s the match-winner.”

The goals kept flowing and majors to Lachie Schulz and Jamie Elliott put the Pies in front halfway through the final quarter.

“Deafening response. They’ve travelled so far and filled the stands,” Hudson said of the Collingwood fans after Schulz’s goal.

“They don’t travel that often, they have pretty comfy couches at the MCG, but they play well on the road.”

Collingwood had played seven straight matches in Melbourne, dating back to their last trip to Perth to face the Dockers on May 8.

The Pies rarely venture away from the familiar confines of the MCG, playing just six interstate games across this season, which includes Gather Round.

Of their 23 matches this season, 14 of them are at the 100,000-seat MCG, with another three games around three kilometres across the city at Marvel.

The Travel Dad tweeted: “It’s clear the very unfair travel burden @CollingwoodFC have to bear is impacting them. When will it end. Time for more games at the G.”

Another fan wrote on X: “I feel for the pies I really do, such a strong team being dismantled by cruel jet lag, AFL do something about this awful fixturing.”

Regan Phelps quipped: “Collingwood clearly suffering from jet lag.”

An account called Super bont x Daicos declared: “Embarrassing, did we forget to get off the plane?”

Rxstaaa added: “First time travelling in 9 weeks. Pies must be jet-lagged.”

Despite the loss, Collingwood still holds a healthy lead atop the AFL ladder, while the Suns must surely now be dreaming of their first ever appearance in the finals.
