First players named as blockbuster State of Origin AFL match makes its return
Eight of the AFL’s biggest names, including the reigning Brownlow medallist, have been selected for State of Origin’s return match.
Reigning Brownlow medallist Matt Rowell is among an initial group of eight players named to play in State of Origin’s return match in February.
Western Australia will host Victoria at Optus Stadium on February 14, with four players from each team being announced on Friday.
Gold Coast’s ace midfielder Rowell, Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli, Port Adelaide’s Zak Butters and Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron were named in Victoria’s team.
Those chosen for the WA side were Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps, Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton, Fremantle star Shai Bolton and Hawthorn defender Tom Barrass.
Suns mentor Damien Hardwick, who coached Victoria in 2020, said there were “few players more suited to an Origin arena” than Rowell.
“If it were up to me, he’d be one of the first names on the team sheet and it’s great to see that I’m not alone in saying that,” Hardwick said.
“It’s fantastic to see a new generation of players earning the opportunity to represent their state, and I’m sure it will be a proud moment for both Matt and his family to see him pull on the ‘Big V’.”
Bontempelli, who represented Victoria five years ago, said: “Growing up in Victoria, you always dream of representing your state alongside the best players in the game, so to now get the chance to again is pretty special.
“It will be a huge honour and I can’t wait to run out there and represent the ‘Big V’.”
Perth-born Cripps had similar sentiments about being chosen to play for his home state.
“It’s a huge honour to be chosen to represent WA,” Cripps said.
“There’s a real excitement around the return of the match and I can’t wait to play alongside Shai, Tom, Aaron and other WA stars come February.”
Swans coach Dean Cox will be in charge of WA, while Geelong coach Chris Scott will guide Victoria’s fortunes.
More players from both sides will be announced next week.
