Ugly scenes as Tigers and Hawks stars clash

A host of Hawthorn and Richmond players can expect fines in the mail from the AFL following a fiery contest at the MCG on Sunday.

The Hawks proved far too good for the Tigers as they secured the 16.13 (109) to 6.8 (44) win, but it was scenes in the second quarter that stole the show.

After James Sicily trapped Richmond’s Maurice Rioli holding the ball, the Hawks skipper let the livewire know about it.

As Sicily remonstrated, Tim Taranto came running in and flattened the captain which resulted in a 50m penalty.

Then all hell broke loose.

Players from all over the ground rushed in as spot fires broke out all over the half forward flank.

After play restarted in the middle of the ground and the Hawks surged forward, Sicily found himself again in the thick of it as he and Tom Lynch engaged in some heated push and shove.

Despite the heated scenes breaking out, the Hawks had no worries as they celebrated their Centenary Match in style.

The club had even more to celebrate in the third term when “favourite son” Jack Gunston brought up his 500th AFL goal milestone – and had every teammate get around him and bow down.

Gunston – who becomes only the fifth current player to achieve the 500-goal milestone - was also given a standing ovation from the crowd.

The win launches the Hawks back into second spot on the ladder for the time being and makes it to wins on the trot.

They’ll look to make it a hat-trick next weekend when they take on Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

For Richmond they slump to 2-6 on the season and currently sit above only North Melbourne and West Coast.

They can bounce back into the winner’s circle next weekend when they tackle the winless Eagles at the MCG on Sunday.
