Further light has been shed on tensions within the Sydney Swans playing group after forward Sam Wicks was omitted from the club’s game on Sunday.

Wicks was removed from all duties last week ahead of the team travelling down to Melbourne for the club’s contest against Richmond at the MCG.

His removal from the team was due to an alleged dispute between him and a teammate. As reported by SEN’s Sam Edmund, the 24-year-old was falsely accused of acting untoward with the former girlfriend of a Swans player.

All parties involved were found to be innocent by the club after an internal investigation, after details of the dispute came to light on a recent night out.

Despite being cleared the club elected to leave Wicks out with veteran journalist Caroline Wilson revealing the issue had seen tempers flare between several teammates.

“It related to an issue between Wicks and a teammate,” Wilson said on Nine’s Footy Classified.

“Wicks has denied any sort of inappropriate behaviour with a former partner of a teammate, and the club now believes him.

“But the allegation became so heated, and so potentially divisive during the week that by the time club bosses think they got to the bottom of it, too much damage had been done.

“Dramatically it was decided Wicks would not take part in the football program for a few days.

“I understand there will be a coming together of Wicks and his senior teammate in the coming day or two.

“Don’t worry – tempers were flaring, and it wasn’t just the two players who it was causing friction between. A lot of the playing group were very upset by this.”

Swans coach John Longmire addressed the issue on Monday night and attempted to play down the saga.

“Most of the things you deal with in football, over my time … has been non-football,” Longmire said.

“That’s just one of those things that you need to make sure you work through. We believe we are working through that well.

“We are mature enough to be able to work through that and get our focus on the footy.”

Wicks had a solid start to the 2024 season, forcing his way into the starting 22 after two energetic performances as the sub in Opening Round and Round 1.

He was drafted as a Category B rookie in 2018 and has played 53 games at the club and kicked 36 goals.

He signed a two-year contract extension last November and is contracted at the Swans until at least the end of 2025.

The Swans will take on the West Coast Eagles during Gather Round in Adelaide with the contest taking place at the Adelaide Hills oval in Mount Barker.
