‘Far too modest’: Swans bid for Brodie Grundy rejected

It was believed to be the easiest move of the AFL’s Trade Period but the Sydney Swans will have their work cut out to nab Brodie Grundy.

The Demons have reportedly knocked back a “far too modest” offer to out-of-favour ruckman Brodie Grundy.

The Age reports Sydney’s offer to lure Grundy north was “shut down emphatically” on Tuesday.

Grundy was seen as the big trade coup this time last year, after Collingwood offloaded him to free up salary cap space in exchange for pick 27.

But after just one season at Melbourne, where he was dropped and finished out the year in the VFL, Grundy has sought a trade to the Swans go reignite his career.

When asked on Monday if pick 32 was on the table for Grundy, Swans list boss Charlie Gardner said the club were still working through a deal.

“We haven’t had any meaningful discussions as yet with Melbourne. We’ll do that over the next week or so,” he said on AFL Trade Radio.

“I don’t feel like giving a running commentary.

“We’ll have those discussions with Melbourne over the next few days.

“I don’t want to speak for (Brodie); my sense is it’s a football decision and Sydney is really attractive for him in terms of the group.

“We need some support around our midfield.”

It comes after Grundy to Sydney was considered the surest bet of the Trade period heading in.

Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire reported before the prelim finals the big man wasn’t a part of Melbourne’s 2024 player meeting, a move that all but locks in his departure.

“Melbourne had a future planning meeting with all the players and it was mutually agreed that Brodie Grundy, no need to turn up and Brodie was happy not to. That is what my information is,” McGuire said on Footy Classified.

“No ranker, but just: ‘We‘re finishing and that’s done’.”

Herald Sun reporter Sam Landsberger told Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle: “Has to be cheap from a trade point of view. He was (traded for Pick) 27 last year to Melbourne – Sydney should get him for that at an absolutely maximum.

“It should probably be less, given he needs to get out of Melbourne and he’s not in their best 23 players for the semi-final.

“That gets done seamlessly.”

But the Demons have revealed they’d be happy to keep Grundy if a deal can’t be reached with the Swans.
