Essendon's fresh legs key to winning in clash with Western Bulldogs

ESSENDON coach James Hird has been careful to lighten the training load for his players ahead of a bruising clash with Western Bulldogs on Saturday night.
The Bombers (9-3) regained some momentum after two consecutive losses with a stirring four-goal win against Fremantle in Perth last Saturday.
However, Hird is expecting the Bulldogs - coached by his former assistant Brendan McCartney - to live up to their reputation as the contested-ball kings in their Etihad Stadium encounter.
The Bulldogs average a competition-high 157 contested possessions a game, compared to Essendon's 151.
And, while Hird was happy with his side's efforts against the Dockers last week, he's conscious of the need for fresh legs.
"We can improve in a lot of areas," Hird said.
"Last week we lost the contested ball (count) and the clearances, so we need to do better there.

"We had a run of goals kicked against us, which was five goals to none.
"We have to continue to be physically stronger and fitter to run out games.
"Against the best teams, I still think we are a little bit off in that area."
The Bombers will start as favourites against the Bulldogs who have a 5-7 record following their 58-point hiding at Etihad Stadium at the hands of the struggling Brisbane Lions last week.
"But I think like every team, you're cautious as to how well you can go week to week in this tough competition," Hird said.
"We understand that winning in Perth is important, but winning the next week is just as important to consolidate that win.
"Macca (McCartney) is building his team the right way with his contested football and you certainly know you are in for a game in that area. We want to make sure we match them in that area and then do some things better elsewhere."
Ruckman Tom Bellchambers has been left out of the side for the second successive week.
"David (Hille) was very good last week," Hird said.
"We know we have three very good ruckman, Tom, Paddy (Ryder) and David, and they will all get opportunities."
The Bombers have recalled Sam Lonergan, while Angus Monfries could not be considered because of a hamstring injury.
The Bulldogs regain ruckman Will Minson from suspension.
Ryan Hargrave, Justin Sherman and Lucas Markovic also return, while small forward Daniel Giansiracusa is out with a foot injury.
