‘Disaster’: West Coast players hold ‘intervention’ amid growing concerns around the club’s direction

The situation at West Coast has reached crisis point, with the playing group turning on the club hierarchy holding a major ‘intervention’.

Leaders of the West Coast playing group have reportedly held an “intervention” in a bid to turn around its woes after the worst start to an AFL season in the club’s history.

The Eagles are winless in 2025 and sit rock bottom of the AFL ladder with seven losses in seven games.

And the side’s leadership group is reportedly growing increasingly worried with the club’s direction after a horror 18 months punctuated by key personnel leaving for rival clubs and very minimal success on the footy field.

This led to the leadership group expressing their anger and frustration with the management of the club, according to veteran journalist Caroline Wilson.

“There was a meeting at the club last week. I’m told one of the key speakers at the meeting was Jeremy McGovern, the West Coast vice-captain,” Wilson told Seven.

“Obviously Liam Duggan and Oscar Allen were there the captains, Jake Waterman, and other leadership group members — Jack Graham (and) Liam Baker. It’s been put to me that it was an extended version of the leadership group.

“The coach was there, Andrew McQualter. The Head of Footy John Worsfold, and the footy GM Gavin Bell.

“There was anger, there was frustration, there were robust conversations, serious questions asked about communication between coaches and players — and just the general question of: ‘What are we doing?’”

West Coast have won just 10 of their last 79 games and have been on a downward slope for several years and it only appears to be about to get worse as several of its star players explore their options elsewhere.

Last year, star defender Tom Barrass joined Hawthorn, while recently club captain Oscar Allen was seen meeting with Hawks coach Sam Mitchell as he susses out a potential move.

And Wilson reports players felt an ‘intervention’ was needed.

“It was put to me by someone in the players’ camp as an ‘intervention’, and that there was concern for (their) new and untried senior coach in McQualter,” Wilson continued.

“I spoke to Don Pyke, the CEO of the footy club, (and) he said he didn’t agree with the term ‘intervention’. He agreed that there was disappointment and frustration.”

The Eagles will host Melbourne this weekend on Saturday night as they look to break their winless streak that spans all the way back to Round 22 last year.
