Disaster for Collingwood and their $7m man Brodie Grundy after grim injury news

Collingwood fans are holding their breath as they wait to find out just how bad the injury Brodie Grundy suffered on Anzac Day is.

Brodie Grundy is looking at an extended stint on the sideline after suffering a knee injury during Collingwood’s win over Essendon on Anzac Day.

The ruckman, who in 2020 signed a seven-year deal reportedly worth around $7 million, was hurt in a collision with Bomber Sam Draper on Monday as the Magpies won an 11-point thriller.

Grundy underwent scans on Tuesday to determine the extent of the damage. SEN’s Sam Edmund suggested a PCL issue could keep him out of action for 10-12 weeks.

Footy journalist Tom Browne told Triple M: “There’s big concerns around a PCL knee injury, which could see him miss a significant chunk of the season.

“That could have a massive bearing on Collingwood’s finals chances and things like that.”

Later on Tuesday, Collingwood confirmed that the two-time All-Australian had injured the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

“We are all disappointed for Brodie. While he is a key member of our team and will be missed, out of adversity comes opportunity for other members of the squad to play a role during this time,” Collingwood GM of Football Graham Wright said in a statement.

“We know Brodie will be dedicated to his rehabilitation and will continue to remain involved with the team as he recovers.”

Grundy was quizzed by Fox Footy’s Garry Lyon about the knee issue after full-time on Monday, saying it was “pretty sore”.

“He jumps in hard, Drapes, so made me earn it,” Grundy said with a smile.

However, it won’t be a laughing matter if the Magpies are without their big man for months, especially after he played a blinder on Anzac Day. Grundy registered 33 hit-outs to go with 16 disposals as he stepped up in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.

Mason Cox, who came under heavy criticism earlier this month as pundits called for Collingwood to abandon their “experiment” with the American import, may win a recall if Grundy is sidelined for an extended period.

Darcy Cameron will have to shoulder a greater workload in the ruck without Grundy in the side and the 28-year-old’s injury is another blow for the Pies, who also face losing Nathan Kreuger for the season if he needs surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

Collingwood is sitting in eighth spot after six rounds, with new coach Craig McRae guiding the side to three wins and three losses.

The Pies suffered defeats to West Coast and Brisbane before bouncing back to form with victory over the Bombers on Anzac Day.
