Kernanhan appeared on McGuire's EMT show on FoxFooty last night, and the hot topic was Carlton's coaching future.

And while Kernahan was firm in backing Ratten for the rest of this year, he didn't guarantee him a job beyond 2012.

Earlier this year, McGuire sparked rumours that Carlton would approach Mick Malthouse to replace Ratten, saying the former Collingwood coach would be a good fit at Visy Park.

That comment sparked a strong response from Kernahan, who wrote on the Blues website that is was "absolutely inappropriate" for the Collingwood president and media figure to be "discussing or speculating on Carlton football club matters".

Last night, the football world waited for McGuire to broach the subject of Malthouse with Kernahan. But when the Collingwood president came to ask it, he appeared to be lost for words before backing off.
