Dane Swan says he used to drink vodka during recovery sessions, after going out partying following AFL games.

The former Brownlow Medallist painted an extraordinary picture of his rock star lifestyle while at the peak of his footy career when speaking on his Hump Day with Scotty and Swanny Podcast.

The Magpies star told fellow co-host Scott Cummings he was able to get away with drinking at team recovery sessions the day after playing for the Pies by mixing vodka and Gatorade.

He said he was able keep drinking during the team’s morning recovery sessions before again beginning to party straight after.

“I turned up, no matter how f***ed I was,” Swan said of his determination to make it to the team sessions after his wild partying.

“I remember sitting (at the club) there in recovery one morning at like 9am. I’d been at a party.

“I left the party, grabbed a Gatorade bottle, filled it up three quarters Gatorade, one quarter vodka and sat on the bikes doing recovery and drinking vodka Gatorade — just waiting to go back to the party.

“If I hadn’t have topped up I would’ve been f***ed by the time I got back to the party, and I wouldn’t have gone.

“What’s wrong with that?”

Swan also said he was able to host parties at his home throughout his career without violating any team rules.

Dane Swan was untouchable.

“The unfortunate thing was the party was at my house, so there was nothing I could do about it,” he said.

“I had to go.”

Swan last month revealed another side of the partying antics that never became public knowledge during his footy career.

The 35-year-old said the scariest phone call he has ever received was from Collingwood chairman Eddie McGuire following a weekend of fun after the 2015 AFL grand final.

Swan also said some of the stories that have never made the light of day would have been enough to end his football career.

Thankfully for him, his indiscretions stayed out of the spotlight.

“A lot of stuff did come out but, to the footy club’s credit, they pushed around a lot of stuff for me, which was nice,” Swan said.

Dane Swan never seemed to let his partying impact his performance.

“There was a couple there towards the back end of the career (where the club said), ‘If this makes the media, we won’t be able to save you’.

“So there was a couple of nervous sleeps when the media was sniffing around.”

Bizarrely, it was a moment of misunderstanding which actually led to his scariest moment with McGuire.

Swan told the podcast he woke up on a Monday morning following the 2015 AFL grand final between Hawthorn and West Coast and immediately collapsed into a panic when he saw he had 100 unread text messages on his phone.

Then he really started to sweat when he saw Maguire’s name pop up on his screen.

He said he took a moment to compose himself then called back his boss, fearing his career was about to come to end.

“I said, ‘Ed’. He said: ‘Hey mate, have you heard the news,’” Swan said.

“I was like, ‘Na mate, give it to me’. I thought this was the end of my career.

“He said: ‘Your pub’s burnt down.’ I said: ‘Did I do it?’.

“He said no and I was like, ‘Is that it? Thank f*** for that. I thought it was something bad’.

“I turned the phone off and had the best eight hours of sleep of my life.

“I actually did nothing wrong that day, it’s happened a couple of times where I have been in trouble and it’s very, very scary.”
