The AFL score review system was copping another bashing after an apparent howler early in today’s Melbourne-Collingwood clash at the MCG.

But the League says its score reviewers made the right call

A Brody Mihocek snap at goal was declared a behind — to the angst of fans at the ground and those watching at home — after the decision was sent upstairs.

The goal umpire wanted to check a replay to see whether Demon Angus Brayshaw had got a finger on Mihocek’s snap in the opening minutes.

Initial replays seemed unclear as to whether the Melbourne midfielder did in fact get a finger on it.

Fans were then left seething after a ‘behind’ was signalled on the MCG scoreboard.

Most watching believed the decision was made after the score reviewer had viewed incorrect footage — that of a snap from Jordan Roughead who had been involved in the passage of play that led to the ball ending in Mihocek’s arms.

But at half-time Fox Footy reported the score reviewer didn’t make an error, with the decision made after seeing zoomed-in footage of Mihocek’s snap.

Confirming their take on what had happened, the AFL said: “The score review official reviewed this vision of B. Mihocek’s snap for goal in the first quarter of today’s match at the MCG.

“An angle from an earlier contest involving J. Roughead was incorrectly aired by the broadcaster but this vision was not used during the review process.”

This is the vision that led to Brody Mihocek goal being called a behind.

It is not the first time this season the review system — and the issue of viewing the wrong vision — has raised its head.

In round 11 Fremantle star Michael Walters was awarded a goal as the review system faltered. On that occasion Collingwood was on the receiving end as cameras checked goal-line vision to see if the ball was touched — and not footage of the attempted smother close to Walters.

The AFL conceded Walters’ goal had been touched and “technical reasons” had prevented the score review officer from viewing the definitive replays.

The following day an almost-identical incident occurred, when Eagle Oscar Allen was awarded a goal after vision of the goal line was shown.

Other replays showed Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli had touched the ball off the boot, however that vision was not seen by the score review operator.
