Collingwood star Dayne Beams’ retirement is finally official after Collingwood confirmed it has reached a settlement with the 30-year-old.

Beams confirmed his retirement last month, but details of his parting with the Pies have remained clouded throughout the second half of the season.

Beams had a further two seasons remaining on his contract with Collingwood after his high-profile return in a trade with the Brisbane Lions.

He sat out the entire 2020 season after announcing his decision to spend the year focusing on his mental health.

Beams in October opened up on the harrowing details of his gambling and pain killing addiction. It led to a downward spiral culminating in the 30-year-old crashing his car deliberately into a power pole.

Beams made no secret of his retirement, jumping the gun before a settlement had reportedly been finalised.

Collingwood confirmed the deal had been reached in a statement on Wednesday.

Beams said in the statement: “Some time ago it became apparent to me that the demands of the game, which for many years I thrived on, were not helping my recovery.

“Once I understood this it was easier to put my wellbeing and that of my family first. I am a father to two lovely children and a husband to Kelly, who I owe so much to.

“Challenges remain. That’s life. But with experience, understanding and the help of many people I am in a stronger position to deal with them.

“I have many teammates and staff at Collingwood to thank for helping me through a particularly tough time. The club’s understanding, patience and care were always there and the fact we were able to come to a mutual agreement is important to me.

“Many at Brisbane also shared and supported me through my journey. I thank the Lions.

“And to Kelly, the kids and my family — I am full of love and admiration for all of you.”

Collingwood also announced the club’s decision to de-list midfielder Rupert Wills and defender Flynn Appleby.

Collingwood’s list completion for the 2021 season, excluding its draft picks at the 2020 AFL Draft, came after the AFL confirmed some big changes for squad management next year.

Clubs have been advised that for the 2021 a maximum of two players who were previously on a club’s 2020 Primary List can be transferred to the club’s 2021 Category A Rookie List.
