Collingwood eviscerated by AFL fans after nightmare Trade Period

Things went from bad to a downright nightmare for the Pies as fans and social media ripped into the club after a horror Trade Period.

Oh no.

Collingwood have faced a mountain of backlash throughout the entirety of the Trade Period and on Thursday night tensions only escalated.

As the clock wound down, the Pies sent several stars out the door with very little coming back in return.

Jaidyn Stephenson was the first to go in a trade that lands him at North Melbourne. Second up was Tom Phillips who was sent to Hawthorn for next to nothing in return.

Right at the death it was Adam Treloar who was sent to the Western Bulldogs with a host of draft picks swapping hands.

In the end the Pies shed close to $2 million from their salary cap. An issue that led to them looking to offload their stars.

Collingwood’s Trade Period in the end paints a pretty bleak picture for their already frustrated fans. They bring in picks 14, 65, 70 and a future second-rounder, but they’ve lost Treloar, Stephenson, Phillips, Atu Bosenavulagi and picks 26, 33, 39 and 42.

The disastrous cleaning out of the players and netting very little in return left social media in disbelief and saw the blowtorch applied to the Pies.

“What’s gone at Collingwood this trade period is nothing short of embarrassing. Can’t sugar coat it,” racing editor Ryan Reynolds wrote.

The Herald Sun’s Kate Salemme wrote: “So Collingwood traded the draft picks it got for Jaidyn Stephenson to the Bulldogs in the Treloar deal. Essentially, the Magpies traded Treloar, Stephenson and Bosenavulagi for pick 14 and a future second-round pick. Good grief.”

Former AFL player Jude Bolton wrote: “Feeling for Collingwood supporters. Absolute fire sale. Controlling the list and management of the TPP has never been more important, particularly with shrinking rosters.”

The nightmare for the Pies began ahead of the Trade Period when it became clear the club was attempting to offload Treloar.

A lucrative contract and concerns over his ability to perform while his wife and young daughter where in Queensland saw the Pies move to try and ship the star out.

Treloar extended his contract until the end of 2025 only last year, and will now see it out at the Bulldogs with SEN’s Sam Edmund reporting the Pies will pay $300,000 per season for him to play at an opposition club.

As the backlash continued to mount following the Trade Period, Collingwood’s list boss Ned Guy fronted up on Fox Footy’s Trading Day. The interview didn’t exactly help ease the minds of angry Pies fans as the hard hitting questions were put to him without any real answers being delivered.

“It’s not a fire sale at all. We wanted to replenish the list. To get into the first round you’ve got to give something up,” Guy said.

“It’s part of a plan we all put together and one we executed today. As I said, we looked to get to the draft to replenish our list.

“The salary cap issue is a bit of a beat up. It’s topical. We don’t think it is as bad as people have put out there.”

David King wasn’t buying the spin Guy was attempting to put on the nightmare situation that had unfolded at Collingwood.

“We’ve never seen anything like this, I’m struggling to get my head around clearing $2 million in a salary dump at the expense of some wonderful young talent that you’re going to try and find the next wildcard talent in the draft,” he said.

“I’m struggling to get my head around this being part of any plan. At the end of this do you think Collingwood will hold you responsible for this and look at your employment?”

Social media was in the same boat as King and couldn’t believe what they were hearing and seeing unfold from the Pies.

Bizarre that Ned Guy is the only one that’s faced the music regarding Collingwood’s PR disaster. And has obviously been gagged. Where’s the blokes that are actually pulling the strings.
