PORT Adelaide great Kane Cornes believes Carlton will refuse to trade with Adelaide if pick No. 13 is the Crows’ sole offer for Bryce Gibbs.

Gibbs, 27, requested a trade home to South Australia on Monday, despite having three years of his contract remaining.

It’s this detail that is likely to push Gibbs’ trade price up, according to Cornes.

“That (pick 13) won’t cut it if you’re in the Carlton camp, considering he has three years to go on his contract,” Cornes told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight.

“Worst case for Carlton is if they keep Bryce Gibbs, say ‘you’re off the table and you’re playing for us for the next three years’. They are well within their rights to do that.

“Carlton holds all the power. It’s up to Adelaide to come up with something where they can get the deal done.”

Cornes expects Adelaide to offer Gibbs a four-year deal with incentives.

Young Crows midfielder Jarryd Lyons is out of contract and has been thrown up as a possible add-on to get the deal done. But whether Don Pyke is prepared to part with the 24-year-old or if the Blues are indeed keen on that option is yet to be determined.

If Gibbs does end up at Adelaide, Cornes believes he would be a perfect fit for the club.

“If you look at Gibbs’ profile through the midfield, he’s versatile and is a beautiful user of the footy,” he said.

“He can play inside, on the wing and also go to halfback if need be. He also has that defensive element to his game that Carlton have used him in at times.

“It’s a great get for Adelaide. Now it’s just up to them to land the deal ... I think it will happen but it will take a lot of work.”

List expert Chris Pelchen shared Cornes’ sentiment, noting how seamlessly Gibbs would slot into Adelaide’s engine room.

“He’ll have a great impact,” Pelchen told AFL Tonight.

“He’s exactly what they need, especially after they lost (Patrick) Dangerfield 12 months ago.

“With the Crouch brothers developing nicely and Scott Thompson at the end of his career, outside of Rory Sloane they needed someone like a Bryce Gibbs, so he’s perfect for them.”

Although the 2014 Carlton best and fairest has been durable throughout his career, one doubt that may exist may be how long Gibbs can play for.

But Cornes insists this should not be a consideration given his track record.

“Players are playing for longer now. We’ve seen that,” he said.

“Bryce Gibbs has been really durable throughout his career. I think Adelaide would be really confident with its medical team to get at least five good seasons out of Bryce Gibbs.”

The Crows and Blues have until 2pm next Thursday, October 20 to orchestrate a deal.
