Cameron's a catch worth keeping

A BOAT to go fishing in might just be what the Giants need to re-sign rising star Jeremy Cameron.

A BOAT to go fishing in might just be what the Giants need to re-sign rising star Jeremy Cameron.

The highly talented forward comes from the tiny town of Dartmoor in Western Victoria. He loves the great outdoors and throwing a line in with his mates.

"At home I used to get off the bus and say hello to Mum and get straight down to the river and catch some bream or redfin," Cameron said.

The Parramatta River isn't quite as pristine as the streams around Dartmoor and Cameron has learned it is best not to eat your city catch.

"I ate one but I wouldn't do it anymore," he said.

A heavy metal content in the fish has been just one of the adjustments to city life the 19-year-old has had to make.

The transition from a town of just 150 people to Australia's most populous city hasn't been easy.

"It's different," Cameron said. "It's a little weird. I never really went to the city in Victoria."

But being able to go fishing with teammates Sam Reid and Anthony Miles has helped the lanky forward settle in to the new life.

Having another 30-odd mates the same age has also made a difference.

"It's been good having all of us in the same boat," Cameron said.

The teenager is adapting so well that he is leading the Giants' goalkicking with 13 from eight games.

He kicked five against the Western Bulldogs in round five, four against North Melbourne in round two and three against Essendon last week.Adding to the merit of those performances is that the average losing margin for the three matches was 79 points.

His impressive form has put him among the favourites for the NAB Rising Star award after he earned a nomination in round two.

The Giants are keen to talk with Cameron's management about his plans at the end of 2013, when his contract expires. The parties are expected to meet this month.

Tomorrow's match against Geelong will be Cameron's first in his home state. It's as tough a road trip as they come. The young team will relish the bye weekend after a 10th road trip this year, including the NAB Cup.

The round 12 match against Richmond sets up the prospect of Cameron teaming with No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton for the first time. Just who plays at full-forward is up in the air."I think we'll mix it up," Cameron said.

The Giants' No.7 draft pick, Nick Haynes, will make his senior debut tomorrow.
