AFL 2020: Lions tipped to keep Cameron in Brisbane despite offers from Victorian clubs
The Brisbane Lions are confident of re-signing star forward Charlie Cameron to a long-term deal.
THE Brisbane Lions are poised to re-sign star forward Charlie Cameron in the face of lucrative offers from at least three Victorian clubs.
Cameron is contracted to the Lions until the end of next season but reports earlier this month suggested he could be tempted to accept a big-money offer from a Victorian club.
However, it’s understood the Lions are extremely confident of keeping the 26-year-old small forward at the club long-term.
Mount Isa-born Cameron has also indicated he is no rush to leave Brisbane after joining the club in 2018 from the Adelaide Crows.
“I’m happy here at the moment,” he said.
“I’ve just got to worry about playing good footy and enjoying my time with the boys. I’ve enjoyed my time here.
“I’m loving my footy up here at the Lions. I guess the weather’s beautiful as well, so I can’t complain.”
Disappointed with his performance in Brisbane’s loss to Geelong last Thursday night at the SCG, Cameron said he was concentrating on improving his form rather than being worried about his future.
“I’m not getting a kick at the moment so I’ve got to focus on getting a kick first and then I guess worrying about the off-field stuff,” he said.
Cameron was confident the Lions, who won four successive games before losing to Geelong, would bounce back against GWS at Giants Stadium on Saturday.
“We played well for three quarters (against the Cats),” he said.
“We’ve got a review so there’ll be a lot of honest questions being asked around how our efforts were in the third quarter.
“It should be a good game this weekend against two explosive teams and exciting teams, and we’re looking forward to it.”
The Giants ended Brisbane’s finals campaign last season, with Cameron admitted that would be a motivating fact on Saturday.
“They knocked us in the semi-final ,,, it’s a long time between drinks,” he said.
Brisbane would also like to win on the road, with both of their losses this season having been away from the Gabba.
Away form is set to be even more crucial this season with clubs spending extended periods in interstate hubs in the competition’s fight to continue in the face of COVID-19.
“Last year we won three games in row on the road at the end of the year,” Cameron said in defending the Lions’ ability to perform outside of Brisbane.
“We’ll just take it as it comes. We just have to worry about playing quarter to quarter.”
