A STUNNING 11-goal third quarter was the catalyst for Casey Scorpions' 13-point win against premier Geelong in the VFL.

And it was Demons forward Jesse Hogan who turned most heads at Simonds Stadium.

Casey was down by eight points at the main break before piling on 11 goals to three in the third term, setting up the 18.12 (120) to 16.11 (107) win.

Dockers pound Dees into hell

Hogan, who was picked by Melbourne in last year's mini-draft and is not eligible for AFL selection this season, showcased his workrate.

He finished with five goals and had a brief last-quarter stint in the backline to help stem the Cats' charge.

"(Jesse's) a key forward and is obviously going to be very exciting for the Melbourne Football Club," Scorpions coach Rohan Welsh said.

"He's aggressive, strong and quick, (and) they're pretty hard to come by. He knows areas of his game he needs to improve, but he's got that level head on his shoulders."

Welsh said Demons rookie Tom Couch, who had 30 possessions, was another standout.

"Couch has been sensational for us," he said.

"He's one who's just been putting his name up week in week out, so to see someone like him get an opportunity (for Melbourne) would be good."

Recruit David Rodan, alongside fellow tall Jack Fitzpatrick (five goals), also earned the praise of the coach.

It wasn't all bad news for Geelong, however, with young midfielder Josh Cowan playing his first competitive match since March last year.

Cowan, who has been battling an achilles tendon problem and went to London for surgery this year, came through unscathed.Big man Nathan Vardy (four goals) continued his successful comeback with another solid performance, clunking several contested marks inside 50 and having regular stints in the ruck.

Geelong will keep an eye on young defender Joel Hamling, who finished the game on crutches after injuring his left ankle in the last quarter.

The Scorpions join the Cats, Williamstown and Box Hill on five wins and two losses - just half a game behind VFL ladder leader Port Melbourne.
