COLLINGWOOD women’s coach Wayne Siekman has called on the AFL to change AFLW time-on rules, which he fears will be manipulated by clever players.

The AFLW clock stops only for goals and major injuries, but Siekman would like to see time held for behinds as well.

“If you kick points and it’s a strong breeze — I think Brisbane (in the Lions’ win against Melbourne on Sunday) averaged nearly 30 seconds per behind to kick it back in — the clock is still ticking,” Siekman said.

“You can actually kill the time really well if you’re up against a strong breeze.

“Hopefully it’s something the AFL looks at because you’d hate to see a game decided because the clock keeps going.

“I think for any score the clock should stop until the ball comes in.

“Otherwise we’re going to have players that are really smart, there’s some smart footballers, as you can see with the males when they do it they know how to manipulate time if needs be, that could continue to happen if they don’t look at that.”

Collingwood faces Melbourne in a must-win clash for both clubs at Ikon Park tomorrow night.

Both teams dropped their Round 1 matches and in a seven-week season where the top two sides make the grand final, another loss could end premiership dreams.

Collingwood forward Moana Hope was held to just four touches and a behind against Carlton and Magpies midfielder Alicia Eva said her side needed to be smarter to get her into the game.

“We have so many different goalkickers so if there are two players going to Mo, there’s one player who’s free so we need to get better at identifying that player,” she said.

“Then all of a sudden teams can’t afford to double team Mo, and it’ll go back to a one-on-one and I’m sure that’s how she’d prefer it.”

Demons midfielder Elise O’Dea said Melbourne needed to capitalise when it had the ball on Saturday and Eva said it was similar for her side.

“We kicked one goal five, if we turn that into four goals two it’s a very different story,” Eva said.

“With the shorter quarters ... (15 minutes plus time-on) the importance of actually capitalising when you get the chance, we need to make sure we do that.”
