Emma Zielke ‘so proud’ to be reappointed as Brisbane Lions’ AFLW captain

SOME might take being reappointed captain of their team for granted. Not Emma Zielke, who can’t wait to lead out the Brisbane Lions again in AFLW02.

HUMBLED, honoured and honing in on going one better than 2017.

That is the mindset of Emma Zielke who has been reappointed as Brisbane Lions captain for the 2018 AFLW season.

With the courageous Zielke front and centre, the undefeated Lions marched into the inaugural AFLW decider last year when Brisbane fell at the last hurdle to Adelaide at Metricon Stadium.

The Lions will start their 2018 campaign against the Crows in a grand final rematch on Saturday, February 3 at Norwood Oval after a practice match against GWS in Sydney this Saturday.

Zielke was returned as skipper after an open player vote and consultation with the coaching staff.

“When you are seeing the votes being read out and having the girls back me in and give me their trust, it means the world to me,’’ Zielke said.

“I’m so proud to be appointed as the captain again.’’

Zielke said there was an extra edge to pre-season training after losing the grand final.

“The girls have come in really focused and we are all putting in the hard work. We want to build on our 2017 season and the attitude towards that has been first-class,’’ she said.

“There’s 13 new girls in the squad but we’ve come together really quickly.’’
